    Visit the central library

Opened in 2007, the central library is a place that you can go to get great views over Amsterdam from their 7th floor cafe, go to exhibitions, get free wifi (on the 7th floor only - otherwise if you're not a member you have to pay), and there is always something new to discover there.

    Explore the Jordaan neighborhood

I think Jordaan is one of the coolest neighborhoods of Amsterdam. It boasts of lovely little shops, cosy restaurants and trendy hotspots. There’s Noordermarkt, one of the best open-air, canalside markets in Amsterdam. It is a really popular place to live in, even for Dutch people. This district is the most romanticized place in Netherlands and this is evidenced by so many Dutch songs written about it. Walk around the area and get lost in the little alleys and discover a whole new world. Best thing is it’s not flocked by tourists.

    Cycle around Vondelpark

Amsterdam's most popular park is a beautiful leafy space close to the main ring canals, Old West, Old South and Museumplein. Hire a bike for the day, buy some sandwiches from Dutch supermarket institution Albert Heijn and enjoy the park on a sunny day.

Look out for modern art sculptures and free evening open air theatre during the summer.

    Go to Gay Pride!

One of the biggest party weekends in Amsterdam - the first weekend in August, normally - Pride in Amsterdam is an all-encompassing, colourful event with the highlight being the canal parade along the Prinsensgracht. Make sure you get a spot on the canal somewhere early (it starts at 2pm normally) and soak up the atmosphere.

Eat traditional Dutch food with lots of Mums at Moeders!

This "Mum" themed restaurant dishes up some seriously stodgy, seriously delicious traditional Dutch food with the centrepiece choice being the Stamppot. The Mum part comes in the form of thousands of photos of peoples' mothers hanging on the walls. Feel free to bring a photo of your Mum to add to their collection!

    Go to Waterlooplein Flea Market

A huge flea market full of vintage clothes, shoes, bric-a-brac, cameras and trinkets this is the place to go to find bargains in Amsterdam. It's also where you can find paints for your bike, some Delft crockery and cannabis sweets... of course.
